For many of us, we may not be particularly familiar with what it is to be a “fall risk”.  Assumptions may be easy to draw by the term itself (at risk of falls?).  But it only takes one accidental spill of a loved one to quickly learn that overall safety may be what is really at risk.  If you are providing care for an Elder loved one, the reality we need to understand is that as they progress in age the risk of falling in the home or outdoors is going to rise and if it happens we should know how to respond, what to look for and how to prevent it from happening again.  In a recent article with, Anne-Marie Botek offers an in-depth guide on how to safely pick up a love one after a fall and we shall review the bullet points with you today!

Firstly, we need to assess if an injury has been suffered during the fall.  If you are unable to determine if they HAVE been injured, it may be best to seek help from emergency services by dialing 9-1-1.  IF we are able to ascertain that they have not been injured, here are some guidelines for a safe pick up back to an up right position-

  • Remain calm and help THEM stay calm-slow deep breathing can be helpful
  • Slowly work with the patient at their pace and be attentive if this fatigues them or they are not able to complete the motions
  • Sturdy chairs can be moved adjacent the fall victim to provide stability and support
  • Assisting them and then a kneeling position can be a winning combination as we are getting back on our feet (the use of towel will help with patients with knee issues)
  • With the furniture before them while kneeling, instruct them to lean here for support
  • With a second chair behind them, between their arms and kneeled leg, encourage them to push themselves upward and take a seat into the chair. Help steady them and try not to maintain good posture
  • Let their primary care physician know about the incident

You need not worry about the safety of your loved one while they are alone in their home because they do not have to be alone.  A-1 Home Care specializes in Elder Care in Los Angeles and all of Orange County.  Our trained and skilled Home Care Professionals will assure that they are safe and attended to.  If they need help with medication schedules, meal preparation, transportation to doctor visits or maybe just companionship and supervision- A-1 Home Care can help!

Get your kicks on Route sixty-six….

At A-1 Home Care, our caregiver agency also provides twenty-four hours and seven days a week of services to our senior patients. One of the many job tasks that our caretakers assist with is food intake and even food monitoring, depending on a patient’s health condition and if any medication has certain instructions and side effects. So, after a patient does consult with their doctor if there are certain foods to avoid at all cost, then The Donut Man is certainly something to check out.

The Donut Man, located at 915 East Route 66 in Glendora, CA 91740, was established more than forty years ago. It is open twenty-four hours and seven days a week, turning it into a historic landmark over the years in the city of Glendora, a town which most people have not heard of or mistaken as Glendale (at least, in my personal experience). Although the building is no bigger than an apartment flat, it has become notoriously known for its long lines that often wrap around the building. So, it is strongly advised that our seniors do not stand in line, especially on a hot summer day because of no shade.

If one of our caregivers and/or seniors is wanting something sweet or to share a bite with, then do not miss out on some of these treats:

  • Tiger Tail – a chocolate, glazed  bar.
  • Chocolate bar
  • Cream Puff
  • Apricots
  • Fresh Peach
  • Fresh strawberry
  • Peanut Butter
  • Pumpkin

There are some cold facts when it comes Alzheimer’s disease

  • An estimated 47 million people world wide today have Alzheimer’s
  • By 2050, that number is projected to not only double but TRIPLE
  • At this time, there is no cure for the disease

However, studies have shown that there ways to fight off the onset of memory loss

  • Exercise
  • Continuing education
  • Not smoking
  • Proper sleep
  • Maintaining social relationships
  • Maintaining a healthy diet

A study recently published in the journal Neurology says that there are identifiable risk factors for sporadic Alzheimer’s that may be discovered early into adulthood that could lead to a decline in cognitive function.  The part of the brain that is most commonly associated with memory, the hippocampus, can show signs of risk before clinical symptoms become present.  Young adults who are at a genetic risk for Alzheimer’s have by comparison.

Dr. Richard Isaacson of the Alzheimer’s Prevention Clinic states that “Alzheimer’s disease starts in the brain many decades before the first symptoms of memory loss appear, but what’s happened over time is that most people don’t realize their risk until they start having memory loss”.

In a study conducted last year in the United Kingdom, fear of Alzheimer’s was greater than cancer and financial worries.  There are certainly lifestyle choices available to all of us that can help lower the risk of Alzheimer’s.  Proper nutrition can yield many benefits, lowering risk of Alzheimer’s among them.

  • Mediterranean dieting- Consuming higher volume of vegetables, beans, whole grains, fish and olive oil (limiting meat and dairy products) have been shown to dramatically decrease risk of cognitive impairment.
  • Stay away from trans fats and saturated fats- These two fats are known to bring about inflammation which can be hard on the brain. Avoiding full-fat daiory, red meat, processed fast food and fried dishes can keep consumption of these fats at bay.
  • Seek out omega-3 fats- DHA present in omega-3 fatty acids may help prevent Alzheimer’s disease by reducing beta-amyloid plaques. These fatty acids are prevalent in in many cold water fish like salmon, tuna, trout, mackerel and sardines.  Fish oil can also be used as a supplement.
  • Daily tea time- Green tea when consumed regularly has been known to enhance memory and mental alertness and actually slow down the aging process of the brain.

Looking to boost and improve brain health with supplements?  Exploring options such as folic acid, vitamin B12, vitamin D, magnesium, and fish oil can help.

a-1 home care los angeles live in caregiverAre you worried about the cost of 24-hour senior care?  Think about the costs of medical care if your elderly loved one were to fall.  The following statistics were derived from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2016):

  • Every year, one out of three seniors fall, but less than 50% of them report the fall to their doctors
  • 20% of falls result in serious injuries, such as broken bones, hip fractures or traumatic brain injury
  • Over 2.5 million seniors are hospitalized for fall injuries each year
  • The direct medical costs for fall injuries total at least $34 billion, and hospital costs account for two-thirds of the total medical costs

An elderly person with impaired vision, balance and coordination problems, spinal degeneration, weak muscles and other conditions is prone to fall.  The risks for falling increase greatly if seniors live alone.

A-1 Home Care Elder CareLosing one’s driving privilege is one of the hardest things for the elderly.  A symbolic rite of passage, it signifies a transition from independence to dependence, amplifying one’s sense of personal inferiority associated with aging.  However, when a senior’s health conditions become an endangerment to others on the road as well as to himself, it’s time to take the keys away no matter how manipulative the loved one can get.  Tantrums, threats of suicide, stubborn refusal to surrender the keys, abusive name-calling and other aggressive behaviors can be very intimidating to a family member who’s not used to the symptoms of Alzheimer’s and dementia, but a seasoned caregiver is no stranger to this scenario.

If you’ve already had a difficult conversation with your elderly loved one and it didn’t go well, don’t beat yourself up.  Recognize that it’s the illness — Alzheimer’s or some other form of dementia — that impairs your elderly loved one’s judgment about his own driving abilities.  It’s never too late to call on A-1 Home Care to meet your parents’ transportation needs.  A highly skilled and experienced caregiver can help you confront resistance whenever your parent or grandparent’s behavior gets aggressive.  In-home care also entails meal preparation, bathing, grooming, personal hygiene, companion care, and more.

A-1 Home Care in Glendora conducts thorough DMV checks, criminal background investigations, and professional reference verifications.  Because it’s licensed, bonded and insured, A-1 Home Care’s certified home health aides (C.H.H.A.s), certified nurse assistants (C.N.A.s), licensed vocational nurses (L.V.N.s), domestic care workers and hospice care aides are extensively screened for senior safety.  Not only are our caregivers highly skilled and experienced, they are part of A-1 Home Care’s team because of their compassion and unique talents they bring to the table.  A-1 Home Care brings exceptional caregiving services to communities in Glendora, Azusa, Pasadena, San Dimas, Hacienda Heights, and other cities in Los Angeles County.
